Influenza (Flu) season is upon us and we are beginning to see students test positive for the virus.   Below is some information regarding Influenza, also known as the respiratory flu, from the CDC (Centers for Disease Control).

What is Influenza (Flu)?

Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The best way to prevent flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year.  It is not too late to have yourself or your children vaccinated.  Please call your Primary Care Provider to make an appointment to get vaccinated.

Flu Symptoms

Flu can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. Flu is different from a cold. Flu usually comes on suddenly. The time from when a person is exposed and infected with flu to when symptoms begin is about 2 days, but can range from about 1 to 4 days.

People who have flu often feel some or all of these symptoms:

  • fever*
  • cough
  • sore throat
  • runny or stuffy nose
  • body aches
  • headache
  • chills
  • fatigue
  • sometimes diarrhea and vomiting

*It’s important to note that not everyone with flu will have a fever.

How Flu Spreads

Most experts believe that flu viruses spread mainly by tiny droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby. Less often, a person might get flu by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose or possibly their eyes. 

Preventing Seasonal Flu

The first and most important step in preventing flu is to get a flu vaccine each year. Flu vaccine has been shown to reduce flu related illnesses and the risk of serious flu complications that can result in hospitalization or even death. CDC also recommends everyday preventive actions (like staying away from people who are sick, covering coughs and sneezes and frequent handwashing) to help slow the spread of germs that cause respiratory (nose, throat, and lungs) illnesses, like flu.

If you have concerns about your child’s health or your own health, please reach out to your Primary Care Provider for guidance on prevention and treatment of health related concerns.   And, above all, please keep your child and yourself home if you are ill.  Rest and hydration are an important part of the recovery process.

Donkey Basketball has been postponed from March 2nd, 2019.  The company is unable to make it to Pearl City due to weather conditions this Saturday. It has been rescheduled for April 15, 2019

 The Pearl City District Board of Education announced Wednesday evening that they have voted to hire Dr. Mike Schiffman as the new Superintendent of Pearl City School District.

 Dr. Schiffman will begin his new post officially July 1, 2019, as Pearl City School District Superintendent. He currently holds the position of Superintendent of Schools for Freeport School District 145, a position he has held since 2015. He has experience as a teacher and administrator in the Northwestern Illinois area.

 The hiring of Dr. Schiffman follows a search by the district that included input from the parents, community, faculty, and staff. The initial step of the process was a community and faculty survey. Utilizing the results of the survey, the Board identified the next Superintendent’s focus areas. The school board reviewed applications, supporting documentation, and conducted extensive interviews, background and reference checks during the hiring process.  Board President Bremmer said "Our board was very impressed with the quality of applicants that we interviewed. We feel that Dr. Schiffman's experience, knowledge, and personality will make him a great choice to lead the Pearl City School District." 

 Contract terms for Dr. Schiffman include a three-year contract with a base salary of $120,000.  This is a competitive contract commensurate with the duties and responsibilities as well as the expectations of this Board and community. 

 Dr. Schiffman has expressed the importance of listening and learning to all the stakeholders in the district (students, faculty, staff, administration, current and future board members, parents and community). Dr. Schiffman stated  “I am honored to be the finalist for the Pearl City Superintendent position. It is my belief that all young people can learn and achieve at high levels, and it is our responsibility to ensure that they do. These expectations include having high expectations for students to succeed academically, socially, in their post-secondary education, and in life.”

Schiffman also stated “I believe the Board of Education and the community share similar interests in preparing all students for success, and I believe we can work together to help Pearl City to continue to be a leading district in educating students and helping students achieve success.”

 The Board wishes to thank the members of the community for their valuable input. A lot of insight was gathered from the community surveys and conversations.  Hiring a Superintendent is one of the most important jobs placed upon the Board of Education.  Partnering with the community was vital to the process for selecting our next Superintendent.

Changes with Fees for the 2018-2019 School year:

1)  If your child participates in 3 activities, the fee is to pay for two and get the third activity for free. 
2) For  athletic events at Pearl City Junior/Senior High Schools, students that are currently enrolled in the district are able to get into games for free.

Bullying and Harassment

The District does not tolerate acts of bullying and harassment on any prohibited basis, including acts of harassment based on disability, race and gender. The District has recently adopted revised bullying and harassment policies, which are available at http://www.pcwolves.net.    Any person who believes he or she has been subjected to harassment or a hostile environment should report the harassment or hostile environment to the District and the District will conduct a prompt and thorough investigation into the complaint.
